Potty training 101: gentle tips for a confident start

(and fewer midnight clean-ups)

Potty training is a big step, for your little one, and for you too. It’s a move towards independence, but it can also mean puddles on the floor, sudden outfit changes and the odd midnight sheet swap.

The good news? With a little patience (and a few helpful tools), it doesn’t have to feel so overwhelming.

Here are some simple, supportive tips to help you get started.

1. Know the signs they might be ready

Every child is different, but there are a few signs that can help you spot when it might be time to begin. These could include longer dry spells, showing interest in the toilet, or telling you when they’ve done a wee or poo. If you're noticing these, it could be a good time to try.

2. Keep it calm and positive

Potty training doesn’t have to be a battle. Let your little one get involved, choosing their potty or toilet seat, reading books about the loo, or adding stickers to a reward chart. Small wins deserve big praise. Encouragement goes a long way.

3. Create a simple routine

Consistency can really help. Try sitting your child on the potty at regular points during the day, after meals, before naps and just before bed. If your child is in nursery or with a childminder, share your routine so everyone’s on the same page.

4. Accidents are part of the process

Even with the best routine, accidents happen, and that’s okay. Staying calm and reassuring helps build your child’s confidence. This stage won’t last forever.

5. Protect their sleep space

Night-time potty training tends to come later. In the meantime, a waterproof mattress protector can save you from late-night laundry.

Our Waterproof Cot Bed Mattress Protectors are soft, breathable and fully waterproof, keeping your child’s bed dry and comfortable, and giving you extra peace of mind. Available in two sizes to fit most cot beds, they’re a must-have for this stage.

You’ve got this!

Potty training can feel like a big deal, but you don’t have to get it perfect. Focus on progress, not pressure. Go at your child’s pace, celebrate the small wins, and remember, you’re not alone in this.
