Reusing a mattress is not generally recommended unless it is in excellent condition, fits the cot perfectly, and has been well cared for. Over time, mattresses can lose firmness and hygiene, which may affect safety.

It’s recommended to replace a baby mattress if it shows signs of wear, sagging, or damage. Many parents choose to use a new mattress for each child to ensure optimal hygiene and support.

Pairing the mattress with a waterproof cover, fitted sheet and keeping the sleep space clear of loose bedding is also important.

A baby mattress should be firm rather than soft. This helps support your baby’s spine and reduces the risk of rolling into the mattress. Soft mattresses are not recommended for infants, as they can increase safety risks.

Most cot beds require a mattress measuring approximately 140 x 70 cm, while standard cots typically use 120 x 60 cm. Always check your cot or cot bed’s specifications and ensure the mattress fits snugly with no gaps over 30mm around the edges.

The best cot bed mattress is one that is firm and flat. A firm surface supports your baby’s development and helps reduce the risk of suffocation. Look for high-quality materials, good airflow, and a design that maintains its shape over time.
