Frequently asked questions

What is a cot bed?

A cot bed is a versatile piece of nursery furniture designed to grow with your child. It starts as a baby cot suitable from birth and can later be converted into a toddler bed, typically lasting until around 4–5 years old. This makes cot beds a long-term, cost-effective alternative to standard cots.

What age is a cot bed suitable for?

Cot beds are suitable from birth and can typically be used until your child is around 4 or 5 years old. All should include an adjustable mattress base to lower as your baby grows.

What is the difference between a cot and a cot bed?

The main difference is the size. A standard cot is for use with a 120 x 60cm mattress. They are suitable from birth up to around 2 years if there is no toddler bed conversion. Whereas a cot bed is larger and designed to convert into a toddler bed. Cot beds therefore last significantly longer and offer better value over time.

When should I move my baby into a cot bed?

Many parents use a cot bed from birth, but if you’re transitioning from a smaller crib or Moses basket, this usually happens around 3–6 months, or when your baby begins to outgrow their first sleep space.

How long can a baby use a cot bed?

A cot bed can typically be used up until the age of 4-5 years old, when it is converted into a toddler bed.

Do cot beds convert into toddler beds?

Yes, all of our cot beds are designed to convert into toddler beds by removing one or both side rails. This allows your child to continue using the same bed as they grow, providing familiarity and comfort during the transition from cot to bed.

What size mattress fits a cot bed?

Our cot beds require a mattress measuring 140 x 70 cm, but please check the product details above to confirm. It’s extremely important to check the exact dimensions and ensure a snug fit with no gaps around the edges for the safety of your child. Please note the Clara Mini Cot Bed needs a 120 x 60cm mattress.

Are cot beds safe for newborns?

Yes, cot beds are safe for newborns when used with a properly fitting mattress and in line with safe sleep guidelines. Look for models that meet UK safety standards BS EN 716 and BS 8509, ensure the mattress is firm, flat, and breathable.

What furniture do I need for a nursery?

Every nursery needs a safe space to sleep, a changing area and a comfortable space for feeding. Outside of these a wardrobe, storage and / or shelves would also be highly recommended so you can keep all you need close by and babies surprisingly need more storage than you might imagine.

How long will nursery furniture last?

We offer a 5 year manufacturers warrantly but your furniture can last much longer than that. The drawers and wardrobes are full size items that in all honesty can be used in any room of the house.

Do wardrobes and dressers grow with my child?

Yes absolutely, our wardrobes are a standard size and will continue to look great in your home long after your child is too old for their cot or cot bed, the same can be said for the dressers, the changing top can be removed once no longer needed leaving a practical and stylish set of drawers suitable for any room. The good news is also that all our wardrobe and dressers are manufactured with quality in mind and come with a 5 year manufacturers warranty and are tested to the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) standards to give added assurance to the products quality.

Can I mix and match items?

We don't offer this option directly but you can certainly choose individual items from our different ranges if you're feeling like that's the best option for you.

Do I need to buy a mattress separately?

Our cot bed mattresses are sold separately so you can choose the best option for your baby, we have a number of options to suit and needs or budget. It’s important to select a mattress that fits your cot bed perfectly and meets safety standards.

Are cot beds adjustable in height?

All of our cot beds feature adjustable mattress base heights. Higher positions are ideal for newborns (making it easier to lift your baby), while lower settings are used as your child develops, to minimise the chance they can climb out.

How easy is it to convert a cot bed into a toddler bed?

Converting a cot bed to a toddler bed does vary depending on the cot bed you have but typically involves removing one or both side rails and, in some cases, splitting the end panels to create a lower, accessible bed. It is vital that you follow the user guide for your product which can be found here to ensure the product is built correctly and will be safe for your child, we'd always recommend it being done by 2 people.

Is it cheaper to buy a furniture set?

As you're purchasing a set we're normally able to offer a bundle saving so you get all of the products that you need for a much more competitive price.
