You’ve made it through the first trimester- and you’re nearly halfway there! For many people, the second trimester can feel like a turning point. Nausea may start to settle, your energy might return and your bump becomes more noticeable. But every pregnancy is different, so don't worry if you're not suddenly feeling full of energy and glowing!

Hello, bump!

As your baby grows, you may notice your clothes fitting differently and your bump becoming more obvious. You may also start to feel your baby move, often sometime between 16 and 24 weeks. At first, movements can feel like little flutters, bubbles or gentle taps. Over time, you'll become familiar with your baby's own pattern of movements. There isn't a set number of movements you should expect. Getting to know your baby's usual pattern is what's really important. If you notice a change or reduction in your baby's movements, contact your maternity unit promptly as soon as you notice, rather than waiting until the next day.

Your 20-week scan

One of the big milestones of the second trimester is your 20-week scan, also known as the anomaly scan. This is usually offered between 18 and 21 weeks. The scan looks closely at your baby's development and checks for certain physical conditions. You may also be able to find out your baby's gender, depending on your preferences and local NHS policy. It can feel exciting, but it's also completely normal to feel nervous beforehand. If you have questions or concerns, talk to your midwife.

Start preparing – but don't rush!

The second trimester can be a lovely time to start thinking about the practical side of having a baby. You might want to research car seats, where your baby will sleep, feeding options or what you'll need for those first few weeks. But remember: you don't need to have everything bought, organised and Instagram-ready before your baby arrives. Focus on what will make you feel prepared and supported.

Keep looking after yourself

Continue with a varied, balanced diet and plenty of fluids. You don't need to eat for two- your nutritional needs increase during pregnancy, but not by as much as you might think. If you're feeling well, staying active can be beneficial. Walking, swimming, pregnancy yoga and other moderate activities can all be great ways to keep moving. Listen to your body and don't push yourself beyond what feels comfortable.

This is also a good time to start thinking about your pelvic floor. Regular pelvic floor exercises during pregnancy can help strengthen the muscles that support your bladder, bowel and reproductive organs.

Midwife Emily's top tip:

The second trimester can bring lots of exciting milestones - feeling your baby move, seeing your growing bump and reaching the halfway point. And if you're not loving every minute? That's okay too. Pregnancy doesn't have to be magical every day. Take things at your own pace, look after yourself and enjoy getting to know the little person growing inside you.
