The Pillars of Baby Wellness explained

The pillars of Baby Wellness are brought to us by Inglesina in cooperation with The Baby Wellness Foundation - a group of baby experts including midwives, neonatologists and paediatricians. Together, they aim to shift the focus from “parent-centric” to “baby-centric” thinking in both product design and parent education.

These five pillars - health, bonding, sleep, comfort and safety - encourage a holistic approach to your baby’s wellbeing, supporting not just growth, but fulfilling their full potential.

Health

“A child’s present and future health is strongly influenced by the lifestyle and choices made before and during pregnancy and during the child’s first years of life.” -  Inglesina

Health is the foundation of baby wellness. It supports physical development through nutrition, gentle movement, and regular healthcare. When a baby feels well, they are more settled, curious, and able to engage with the world. This foundation begins in pregnancy and carries through life.

Bonding

“Spending time listening to the baby’s movements in the belly, imagining what they are doing, if and how they are moving, even what their emotions and mood are, […] is already a way of entering into a relationship with them […] to get to know them, so that the birth is not a meeting, but a getting together” -  Inglesina

Bonding nurtures emotional security. From pregnancy onwards, connection can begin through noticing movements, talking, and learning your baby’s patterns. After birth, closeness and responsive care build secure attachment - supporting brain development, confidence, and future relationships.

Sleep

“Sleep is crucial for the activation of physiological processes and mechanisms that are indispensable for the harmonious growth and development of the activities of the baby.”

Sleep is essential for both physical and emotional development. It supports brain growth, recovery, and physical and emotional regulation. Newborn sleep cycles include light sleep for emotional processing and deep sleep for growth and immune system development. A calm, consistent sleep environment helps babies rest deeply and thrive.

Comfort

“In the first weeks of life, nothing makes them feel as comfortable as a hug: feeling contained, wrapped in their mother’s arms, recognising her smell and heartbeat, her voice; everything recalls the pleasant sensations experienced in the womb. Now, to get used to their new life, to learn to discover themselves and their surroundings, they need their parents more than ever.” -  Inglesina

Comfort is about meeting both physical and emotional needs. Feeling held, warm, and secure helps babies adjust to life outside the womb. Soft materials, temperature regulation, and responsive soothing all help babies feel at ease, allowing them to relax, explore, and connect with the world around them.

Safety

“Taking care of your child does not only mean feeding them correctly, watching over their health, ensuring the best conditions for a healthy rest. It means preparing a welcoming and serene place within the family in which they can feel protected and safe.” -  Inglesina

Safety underpins everything. When a baby is protected - whether during sleep, travel, or everyday moments - it allows them to rest, grow, and explore without unnecessary risk. Feeling safe also supports emotional security, reinforcing trust in their environment and caregivers.

In summary, the five pillars work together, not in isolation. When a baby feels healthy, safe, well-rested, comforted, and securely bonded, their overall wellbeing is supported in a truly holistic way - giving them the best foundation to grow, develop, and thrive.
